ABORTION TRAVEL

CELEM

BACKGROUND

On the 20th of December 2013 the Spanish government announced a reform on the current Abortion Law turning it into one of the most restrictive in the world, banning the voluntary interruption of the pregnancy even in cases of malformation. Worldwide media are debating the measures the Spanish Government wishes to take and denouncing them as an abuse of power. Women in Spain took to the streets on a massive scale, but the Government paid them no heed.

IDEA

In the event the reform is approved, the only way to have a safe abortion would be to travel to other countries where the law allows for the voluntary interruption of the pregnancy. To show the consequences the reform would have on Spanish women, we created Abortion Travel, “the agency that should never exist”.
A controversial way of reopening the debate and trying to stop an unjust law that leaves women without the freedom to choose.

RESULTS

National and international media reported on the travel agency reaching a ROI of 1,044,103€, an audience of over 38.5 million, 3 million Twitter impressions, and gathered over 40,000 signatures on our Change.org petition. The campaign reached the Congress and the text of the law was questioned.
On 23rd September 2014 the minister who sponsored the legislation resigned. The law was never approved.
